How to select storages?

Factors such as capital costs (storage and material handling equipment purchase costs) and ongoing expenses (direct labor, building lease costs, size as required by each storage medium) are included in choosing of storages. For instance, the types of rack chosen were based on large number of SKUs i.e. 3000 and above, and the lot size or segregation requirements.

Another example is a “pick tunnel” technology. It is a three-deep pallet flow rack or case flow rack as the primary pick location and a four-deep pushback rack above. In the order picking area, a “pick tunnel” technology is used for better storage density by fully utilizing the empty space above the floor level pick line. In this design, there are some added safety benefits included. The replenishment and pick operators travel and operate in separate aisles, limiting the interaction of order pickers on foot and minimizes cross-traffic, thus reducing the risk of injuries. The three-deep pallet flow lane depth was concluded based on one pallet replenishment point and also allowing the full depletion of a double deep rack location.
